Swim lessons in Frederick, Maryland

A warm pool and a level for every swimmer

Kickboard is a family swim school with one heated teaching pool. We teach ages 3 to 10 in six levels, each with its own cap color, and every swimmer starts with a short placement visit in the water.

  • Ages 3 to 10
  • Six levels, six cap colors

Six levels

Find your swimmer's cap color

Each level has a cap color, an age range and a short list of what swimmers practice. A placement visit tells us where to start, and the instructor decides when a swimmer moves up.

    • Gliding from the wall

    • Back crawl arms

    • Swimming across the width of the pool

Your first visit

Three steps from the front door to a class

A placement visit is a short time in the water with an instructor, so we can suggest a level.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Book a time

Choose a placement time on our enrollment page, or call the front desk. Tell us your swimmer's age and the level you think fits, or tell us you are not sure.

  2. 02

Step 2: Get in the water with an instructor

Your swimmer gets in on the step or within arm's reach of the instructor while you watch from the pool side. We look at how they enter, float and kick, and we go at their pace.

  3. 03

Step 3: Leave with a level

The instructor suggests a level and a cap color, and we show you the classes with room on the schedule.

At the pool

Watch from the bench behind the glass

Parents sit on the bench behind the glass wall, and brothers and sisters are welcome beside you. Swimmers can see you from the water, and the instructor waves to the bench before each class begins.

  • Shoes in the cubbies, towels on the hooks

  • Phones stay away from the water's edge

  • A parent or guardian stays on site

What families write

  • “We booked a placement visit not knowing which level to pick. The instructor got in the water with my son, took her time and told us why she suggested the yellow cap.”

    Tasha W., parent of a four-year-old
  • “The schedule shows which classes have room and which have a waitlist, so I am not guessing, and the front desk picks up the phone.”

    Marcus L., parent of a seven-year-old
  • “The water is warm, the bench by the window is comfortable, and the instructors keep the same routine every week. My daughter knows what comes next.”

    Priya N., parent of a six-year-old
